Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has widely been reported to have ordered HMRC bosses not to close over the summer period as would not provide for all tax payers needs to be met.
A member of the Treasury was quoted in The Telegraph as saying “Encouraging customers to self-serve online wherever possible is the right thing to do, but that cannot be at the detriment of the general public and the vulnerable who need access to the helplines to support them with tax matters. That’s why ministers have halted this change immediately.”
The Chancellor is reported to want to pause the changes HMRC would like to make.
